# Add or adopt a project

Add a Git repository as a canvas, or bring an existing MAO project into a workspace.

Adding a project creates a canvas for an existing Git repository. If MAO already has state for that repository, it uses that state in place.

## Add a project

1. Choose **Add project…** from the navigator or the canvas chrome.
2. Select the repository folder. It must already exist and contain a .git directory.
3. Choose the workspace or folder where the canvas should appear, then add the project.
4. To place a project from the legacy project list into the hierarchy, drag its row onto a workspace or folder.

> **Tip:** If MAO has already used this repository, its notes and canvas state remain in place when you add it to the navigator.

> **Limit:** A repository already listed cannot be added again. A trial is limited to one project.
