# Select and copy terminal text

Select terminal text with the mouse, then copy it to the clipboard.

Terminal text selection follows terminal cells, so it stays attached to the output as new text arrives. Use the copy action when you want the selection on the regular clipboard.

## Select and copy text

1. Drag across terminal text to select it. Double-click a word or triple-click a soft-wrapped line.
2. Copy with <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>C</kbd> on Windows, <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>C</kbd> on Linux, or <kbd>Cmd</kbd> + <kbd>C</kbd> on macOS.
3. You can also open the terminal node menu and choose **Copy**.

> **Tip:** A single <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>-click or <kbd>Cmd</kbd>-click opens a URL in the terminal.

> **Limit:** On Linux and FreeBSD, finishing a selection also writes the primary selection. Only the explicit copy shortcut or **Copy** menu action writes the regular clipboard.
