# Use terminal mouse and cursor modes

Let a mouse-enabled terminal program receive pointer input and show its requested cursor.

Some terminal programs ask MAO to report pointer input and draw a particular cursor shape. When the terminal is focused, MAO forwards those gestures in the format the program requested.

## Use a mouse-enabled terminal

1. Focus the terminal and use the program’s mouse-enabled controls.
2. Hold <kbd>Shift</kbd> when you want MAO to handle a local canvas gesture instead of sending the mouse action to the program.

> **Limit:** The click that focuses a terminal is not forwarded. A reported right-click belongs to the program and does not open MAO’s node menu. Cursor blinking runs only for the focused, visible, expanded terminal.
