# Choose and customize the theme

Select a system, light, or dark theme and optionally adjust local theme tokens.

MAO can follow the system appearance or use a light or dark theme. You can also add local theme token overrides.

## Choose a theme

1. Open **Settings** and select **Appearance**.
2. Choose **Theme**, then pick **System**, **Light**, or **Dark**.
3. To customize the palette, edit the local **theme.json** file.
4. You can also choose **Theme: dark**, **Theme: light**, or **Theme: system** from the command palette.

> **Note:** Local token overrides update live and layer over Satin’s built-in theme.

> **Limit:** Invalid token values fall back to the built-in theme.
