# Switch between layers

Move between Ground and its worktree layers from the navigator rail.

The navigator’s layer rail switches between Ground and isolated layers. Switching changes the active canvas and worktree; it does not merge branches.

## Change the active layer

1. Open the navigator’s layer rail and choose the layer you want.
2. To move keyboard focus back to the rail, press <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Up</kbd> on Windows/Linux or <kbd>Cmd</kbd> + <kbd>Up</kbd> on macOS.
3. To switch to the previous layer, press <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Up</kbd> on Windows/Linux or <kbd>Cmd</kbd> + <kbd>Shift</kbd> + <kbd>Up</kbd> on macOS.

> **Note:** Use the landing action to bring changes into Ground; switching layers alone leaves their branches separate.
