# Set a layer status

Add a short status and progress marker beneath a layer in the navigator.

A layer status lets collaborators see whether work is active, blocked, under review, or done. Set it from a terminal on that layer.

## Update the status

1. Open a terminal on the layer whose status you want to change.
2. Run `mao layer status` with a state, for example `mao layer status --state review`.
3. Add a progress fraction with `--progress 3/5` if useful, or use `--clear` to remove the status.
4. Reopen the navigator to see the status beneath the layer.

> **Note:** Available states are `working`, `blocked`, `review`, and `done`. You can include a one-line status message.

> **Limit:** Changing another layer’s status requires Orchestrator access. `blocked` and `review` mark the layer as needing attention.
