# Edit a project file

Open a project file as plain text and let MAO save your edits.

The project file editor opens safe UTF-8 files as plain text and saves edits automatically. Select a file in a file tree to create its editor node.

## Open and edit a file

1. Add a **New file tree** node and browse to the file.
2. Select a regular file to open its editor node.
3. Type your changes; MAO autosaves them.
4. Choose the Git status chip on the editor to show or hide its diff.

> **Note:** If the file changes outside MAO, the editor detects that change before saving over it.

> **Limit:** Files are limited to 1 MiB. MAO refuses symlinks and paths outside the project root. The editor has no syntax highlighting, search, or diagnostics.
